Executive Summary

Te Reo Māori Subject Association Aotearoa (TRMSAA), also known as Huinga Reo, exists to strengthen, support, and advocate for the teaching and learning of te reo Māori across Aotearoa. Te reo Māori is prioritised throughout this document, with English provided to support accessibility.

Guided by our vision, “Ko te pae tawhiti, whāia kia tata; ko te pae tata, whakamaua kia tina,” we are committed to ensuring te reo Māori thrives as a living language for future generations, grounded in whanaungatanga, manaakitanga, wānanga, kōtahitanga, rangatiratanga and kaitiakitanga. This vision is realised through TRRMSAA (Huinga Reo) — bringing together reo, people, and mātauranga.

TRMSAA (Huinga Reo) connects kaiako through a unified national network, advocates for alignment across policy and curriculum, and supports equitable access to high-quality resources. A key focus is strengthening support for provisionally certified teachers, delivering meaningful professional learning and development, and ensuring effective representation within decision-making bodies including the Ministry of Education and NZQA.

Delivery is achieved through the provision of high-quality teaching resources, structured PLD opportunities, and clear communication channels with education sector stakeholders. Strategic priorities include the development of a dedicated website, webinars, biennial conferences, and targeted PLD programmes.

Huinga Reo is governed by a committed kōmiti, ensuring transparency, accountability, and financial sustainability. The association is supported through membership fees, government funding, and sponsorship.

Together, we work to elevate, sustain, and empower te reo Māori teachers, learners, and communities throughout Aotearoa.
